7 Important Facts of Eye Health

Eyes are the most sensitive organs of our body. Often, we take our eyes for granted and overlook the basic need to take care of them until our vision is affected. Over here we discuss important factors to help you understand what affects your eye health and how you can take care of your vision.

1. Eat right:-

Nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids, lutein, zinc and vitamin C and E help to prevent age-related vision problems like macular degeneration and cataract. Make sure your diet includes green leafy vegetables, EFA rich food items such as sardines, citrus fruits, and carrot.

2. Protect your eyes:-

Wearing protective eyewear such as safety glasses and goggles provide the right protection to your eyes. The right pair of sunglasses will also protect your eyes from UV-A and UV-B radiation.

3. Rest your eyes:-

Prolonged staring at the computer or mobile screen may lead to eyestrain, blurry vision, headaches and dry eyes. Try the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look away about 20 feet in front of you for 20 seconds to reduce the eye strain.

4. Be well informed:-

To maintain a good eye-health you must be aware of the common vision problems like Myopia, Hyperopia, Astigmatism, and Presbyopia. It’s also important to know some of the risk factors that affect your eye health as well. Get a comprehensive dilated eye exam to detect some of the common eye diseases:

  • Glaucoma can happen to anyone aged more than 40 or with a family history of glaucoma.
  • Cataract can develop due to high exposure to sunlight, smoking or diabetes.
  • Diabetic Retinopathy is likely to develop in people with type 1 and type 2 diabetes.
  • Age-related Macular Degeneration usually occurs in people who are aged 50 and older.

5. Follow a daily cleansing ritual:-

Splash cold water into your eyes before going to bed every night. Take care to avoid using warm or hot water when cleaning your eyes. Rose drops before sleep help a lot in keeping the eyes healthy and bright.

6. Handle your contact lens with care:-

One must follow the instructions given by the doctor in order to use a contact lens. Misusing your lenses such as sleeping with contact lenses on and using plain water instead of the liquid to wash them may lead to serious eye infections.

7. Adequate light:-

When working or studying always ensures that you are surrounded by sufficient light. Squinting is not for your eyes as it puts stress on your eyes which over time may result in eyesight problems.
